Shades of Autumn

Leaves are bright colored & radiant and pumpkins & apples are perfect for picking.  Orange, green, brown, yellow, red, and pink are major colors this month.  Wait!  What?  Pink?  Did I say pink?  Yes.  Yes I did.  It's October in all it's Autumnal shades of glory and it is breast cancer awareness month!

To me, no matter how many times it is repeated, this is a very important message to share.  You see, I have a good friend who is a survivor of this disease.  Not only is she a survivor, but she kicked cancer's butt and is now expecting her 2nd child!  Talk about blessings, right?   Here's the deal though.  What if J hadn't done her self breast exam?  What if she hadn't taken the time to regularly check so that she would notice a change, a "you aren't supposed to be there" lump?  I'm grateful that I don't have to answer those scary questions!  Instead, I was able to walk proudly with her during the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure this past September (our 4th year walking together).  I'm not sure if she's even aware how teary and happy I am to see her cross that finish line in her pink survivor shirt!

My plea to you is that you perform a monthly self breast exam, see your doctor, and get your mammograms!  Encourage those that you love to do the same!  Save the ta-ta's!

What can you do to help?  Well, there are many different ways to raise awareness and money for the cause.  Instead of listing them, I'm going to give you a few resources so you can discover some of these ways for yourself.  From bowling, to scrapbooking, to walking, to bake sales, to saving yogurt lids... there's something out there for you!  Trust me.  If you don't find anything through the websites I am providing, but you are still interested in doing something to make a difference, google it!  Most importantly, stay proactive in your own care and encourage those in your life (co-workers, family, friends) to do the same.

Are you a survivor?  Do you know a survivor or a current breast cancer warrior?  Are you thinking pink and doing your self exams each month?

  1. Thanks for that reminder! It's easy for me to lose track of the importance of doing self-checks! And how awesome that you could support your friend in the walk!
